Qi in Feng Shui

Qi concepts spread across Chinese medicine and martial arts—meanings differ by discipline.

Definition

Qi in feng shui denotes the perceived flow, gathering, and quality of environmental influence—not a single measurable gas. Form School asks whether terrain and layout ‘store’ qi; Compass School times qi with stars and directions.

How to Check

  1. Walk the property feeling for drafts, stale corners, and noise pockets.
  2. Compare symbolic qi talk with ventilation, daylight, and pollutant sources.
  3. Note whether doors and windows create straight rush paths.

Classical Basis

《黄帝宅经》 and 《葬书》 treat qi as fundamental; ‘wind scatters, water retains’ remains a core slogan. Later schools split into visible form qi vs calculated star qi.

Application

  • ·Foundation term for both Form and Compass readings.

Common Effects

  • ·Stagnant zones correlate with mould risk; rushing paths correlate with draft discomfort.
  • ·Symbolic prosperity claims should not override building science.

Remedy Direction

Improve airflow curves, reduce pollutants, and align symbolic cures with verified problem zones.

Caveats & Debate

Translating qi into physics invites reductionism; practitioners insist on layered meaning.

Sources

Sources are for verification; schools may disagree.
